It is the genuine cacao and was baptized that way by the Spaniards when they arrived in Mexico. It is cultivated in Peru, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, Trinidad, Jamaica, Mexico, and in the Caribbean. It is a cocoa recognized as high quality, with low tannin content, reserved for the manufacture of the finest chocolates. The grain is thin-shelled, soft and not very aromatic. An example of the criolla variety is the Ocumare cacao from the Ocumare de la Costa Valley, Venezuela.
